Weekend Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans

mailbag-helmets

NASHVILLE – Well, March is now flying by.

After 10 free agent signings, the Titans are turning their attention to the NFL Draft.

Sure, there could still be some more additions in the coming weeks, but the draft is now creeping up.

Let's talk about it all in here…

Here's the link to submit questions: CLICK HERE.

Clement Perry from Waxhaw, North Carolina
Question: Hey Jim! Good to hear from you!!! I hope you're doing well!! It's still tough being a Titans fan in NC in case you were wondering!! haha
My question of course deals with the QBs...
It's ok to like both QB prospects right? It seems like the fan base is so bothered by the idea. I wouldn't be bad having either one for various reasons...but I just feel they're divided on an issue of possibly getting better at a position of need. Maybe it's me...

Jim: Good to hear from you, Clement. It is OK to like both QB prospects. I think the Titans like both Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, it's just a matter of whether they like one more than the other. They're still in the process of finding out, with Pro Days and private workouts on the horizon.

Gabe Abraham from Crossville, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim, I hope that all is well in your world. Just saw today that the Titans are doing another draft party this year and I could not be more stoked about it. To anybody reading this here, it's totally worth the trip to the stadium. It's a great event and a great time. Appreciate all you do for the Jim. I'm gonna assume they're doing it because you told them I recommended it 😂. I'm not sure if anybody on here has asked you yet, as I don't get a chance to read every mailbag, but what would you like to see the team do in the draft? Obviously this one is very significant for the future of the team as hitting on our first pick could bring us all the way back to being a competitive team again.

Jim: Hey Gabe. It should be a cool event, for sure. Especially with the first overall pick.

Here's the info, for those who might've missed it:

Joe Levickis from Joelton, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim! As the (unofficial) biggest Titans O-Line fan, I have to chime in about our offseason progress with the big boys up front.
I have to say, I am extremely excited about our potential moving forward. I think the additions of Moore and Zeitler are exactly what we need. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Wisconsin during the same time as Zeitler, and can tell you he's an absolute beast. He was an incredible high school wrestler, Wisconsin Badger, and Pro Bowl Guard during his first decade plus in the league. I know he'll have a positive impact on Latham's development on the right side.
I know some fans are upset about the amount of money he received, but Dan Moore seems like someone with the right amount of experience, potential, and athleticism to continue to ascend into a good Left Tackle under Bill Callahan. What are your thoughts as it pertains to the starting five this fall?

Jim: Hey Joe. You may officially be the biggest Titans o-line fan. I haven't met anyone who is more committed to the position. I like the looks of the starting group as well. It's definitely a revamped line. I talked to Moore this week, and he talked about the relationship he already has with Peter Skoronski and JC Latham. Zeitler is a proven pro, someone who will be a leader himself. And, I think JC will be better on the right side. But these guys are going to have to build chemistry together. Bill Callahan has more to work with for sure, and I think everyone knows by now I think he's a pretty good coach.

George Darwin from Knoxville, Tennessee
Question: I really truly think that the Titans need to draft Cam Ward.

Jim: Thanks for chiming in, George,

Bill Mahanna from Byrdstown, Tennessee
Question: Why did the Titans let Ryan Stonehouse go? Was it a mutual decision?

Jim: It wasn't a mutual decision – Ryan for sure wanted to stay. But that's the business, and the team now has Johnny Hekker, and Stonehouse is a member of the Miami Dolphins, after signing with the team this past week. The hope is Hekker will continue flourishing, and I wish the best for Ryan, too.

Peter Tsomides from Saco, Maine
Question: Hey Jim. I do everything I can to stay up to date on the Titans from here. I have seen and heard more of Mike Vrabel in the last couple of months than I heard in his whole tenure in Tennessee. I'm listening daily to talk shows where nobody can figure out what he is doing with the Patriots. He's signing all the wrong players. He technically has a GM but he's running the show. The latest is that he's building the same team that he built in Tennessee 8 years ago.
Anyway, I've been reviewing the NFL Power rankings after free agency and I see the Titans are ranked 32nd. Haven't any of the moves made moved the needle? I know that the past season was tough but how can we be looked at as the 32nd team in the league after actively signing players that should be improvements?

Jim: Time will ultimately tell how the Patriots did this offseason. They were definitely active early.
Sorry, but I couldn't care less about the power rankings, Peter.

Kevin Hayman from Nashville, Tennessee
Question: Love your insights. Othe guys quote you in their posts so why not get it from the horses mouth?! I have more of a comment than question! I'm not too worried about the draft and free agency! I haven't seen anyone mention that with a less than average OL, and the boneheaded turnovers by both QBs, it's difficult to remember that we had a 1000 yard pass catcher and rusher last year! Also we have the first pick of all waiver wire players! That means we should be able to nab a player or two who is good but a cap casualty or a situation that requires a cut because of too many guys at one position! I think Levis at least deserves an opportunity to win the starting job even if Ward is the pick,!.I've said it before that a veteran QB is still available for a little bit of Cash, this will start fireworks because the experienced guy who didn't play last year might want to be a mentor now this year with an improved OL. Wait for it, wait for it, Ryan TANNEHILL? Don't know his situation but I haven't seen any mention of him anywhere! Like I said I don't know what his situation is,! But KC brought in smith and drafted Mahomes. TANNEHILL and Ward?! Also watching the SB, we saw what s very good DL can do to the best QB in the league! Add Carter to the group up front and we have a bunch of Dawgs! Hurts is good but if Mahomes can't operate due to pressure, why not go that way,!? Thanks for everything you do!

Jim: Thanks for chiming in, Kevin. I saw where Tannehill has talked with the Vikings. Can't see him coming back here.

Ed Lake from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Question: Hey, Jim, ya' gotta help me here. Hope springs eternal, but I fear an upcoming dilemma for the Titans. It was a pretty lame-to-head-scratching free agency foray, even given the new company line about "building thru the draft." Strangest move: $80M to Moore, $50M GUARANTEED, $30M year 1, top 8 LT pay for a guy never rated as a top 40 LT. Lotta pressure on the O-line Whisperer to develop this guy and others-something not apparent last year.
The dilemma is that the O-line doesn't look much better, and the Titans may be locked into taking a QB (Ward?) at #1 as their only option. Seems it'd be better to parlay that pick into several other high picks given the team's many needs. But, so far, there's no noise indicating interest in that from other teams. Hearing anything? (Ha!) Hate to see a rare #1 pick go for a QB when there's not a consensus there's a "generational talent" there.
So, still hopeful- 30 more days 'til the draft.

Jim: I hear all kinds of things, Ed, but some of it I can't talk or write about, and some of it I wonder if it's true. We'll just have to wait and find out…

Brian Cutler from Plainfield, Connecticut
Question: Hey Jim! It's been a bit since i have wrote. Free agency wasn't flashy to most but im hopeful the Cally will comb through with the prospect we picked up. I personally have been conflicted by the upcoming draft. I keep having flash backs of Marcus being drafted. I know it's not fair to the upcoming QBs but there were so many ups and downs during his time with us. With that said I personally would like to trade down, pick up a veteran QB and see what happens. I believe the team will do everything to be competitive i'm sure but i personally don't see the guy of the future at QB this year. (There is a guy i'm sure but time will tell not the tape)
With that said who do you think (if you have watched enough tape) could be a dark horse qb of a team out of this class outside of the two big names floating around.

Jim: Hey Brian. I think the guys in the "second tier" come with more questions marks, although I'm somewhat intrigued by Jaxson Dart, admit. I think Ward and Sanders are safer bets, although there are pros, and cons, with each one. The decision-makers have a tough decision while they also listen to trade offers.

Have a great weekend everyone!
