Greg Stauffer from Matthews, North Carolina
Question: Hey Jim, long time "Ask Jim" reader & fan! I have been struggling on how I would like to see the Titans use the #1 pick in the upcoming draft. But the Super Bowl was eye opening. Was I the only Titans fan that thought the great Mahomes looked somewhat like Will Levis? Spent most of the game running for his life, being pressures and hit! What do you think? My conclusion is most draft capital should go to O-Linemen to protect the QB (who ever he is) and big D-line to get the opposing QB on his back or running for his life! This Super Bowl proved no matter how skilled the QB & WRs are if the QB is pressured, you lose! So draft thew Titans some BIG O-Linemen & some Edge rushers with some more D-Lineman for depth. Bottom line the Chiefs looked like the 2024 Titans because they lost the battle of the trenches on both sides of the ball! Thanks Jim!
Jim: Hey Greg. Mahomes had a bad day on Sunday for sure, and he doesn't have a lot of those. But give the guy a break, even if the Eagles never did. I left that game not necessarily thinking the Titans needed to use the No.1 on an o-linemen, which isn't going to happen. But, believe me, the Titans are going to address the o-line. My biggest takeaway walking out of the Caesars Superdome was how much a dominant defense can change a game, and make a great player like Mahomes look not-so-great. And, it made me wonder even more about a guy like Abdul Carter myself. And, while Jalen Hurts is an underrated, maybe even an underappreciated QB, the 2024 season showed teams can win without a QB throwing it all over the place, too.
Taylor Pennington from Milan, Tennessee
Question: I do not have any specific questions; rather, I would like to share some reflections on the season. I extend my gratitude to everyone who dedicated their time and effort to the Titans this year. I am appreciative of the opportunity to reside in a country where we can freely express our thoughts and emotions, whether positive or negative. Watching the Super Bowl served as a reminder that, ultimately, we are all human beings, and as fans, we sometimes overlook the fact that these players share that humanity. It was clear during the game that even Patrick Mahomes can experience challenging days. My point is that if he can have a successful season yet still encounter a poor performance, it gives me hope that Will Levis can also turn his career around and deliver the outstanding performances I believe he is capable of. I am optimistic and eager for what the future holds for the Titans. Thank you once again for everything, and may God bless you all.
Jim: Thanks for taking the time, Taylor. I like Will myself. I talked to him at the Super Bowl: CLICK HERE if you missed that story. I'm expecting Will to be back, competing, in 2024, and I'm curious myself to see what his competition will be. GM Mike Borgonzi said he wants to give Will every opportunity moving forward, and Coach Brian Callahan said as much himself. Free agency, and the draft, will be interesting.
Steven McSeveney from Glasgow, Scotland
Question: Hey Jim, hope you're doing well?
So the Super bowl showed us something I've been saying to friends all season: if your offensive line can't protect your QB, stupid/bad plays happen. Even if your QB is Patrick Mahomes. With that in mind, I don't think Will Levis got a fair shot this year, given how poor the o-line was.
I know I'll get a lot of heat for this, but I think we need to address the trenches in the off-season and give Will another crack at it to start next year. Some of what Mike "The Borg" Borgonzi has said makes me think this might actually happen. What are your thoughts?
Jim: Hey Steven. I'm doing great. Been a busy stretch on the road, and it won't be long before I head to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine. This makes three in a row leading off the mailbag with an o-line specific topic. The Titans haven't been very good on the o-line for a few years now, and it's impacted QB play and more. I'm expecting the entire right side of the line to look different this fall, at right guard and right tackle. If the team lands a left tackle in free agency, well, it's not going to shock me if JC Latham bumps to the right side. But that's TBD. When I asked Borgonzi about the team's biggest needs at the Senior Bowl, he went straight to o-line and d-line. He knows it's been a problem. Heck, anyone who has watched the Titans the last few years knows it's been a problem.
Bill Holmes from Fairport, New York
Question: "We weren't winning. No plays were being called for me. Not that I'm a player that ever needs the ball, but if I'm on the field, I want to be included in something. So I took myself out of the game."
That's D-Hop talking about his bizarre move in the Buffalo game when we lost to fall to 1-5. I previously defended the guy as an unselfish player from what I saw on the field, but I saw him make that statement on camera, so there's no "out of context" or "misquoted" excuse here. He said it.
I was actually happy - for him - that he got traded to a winning team and now has the opportunity to play in a Super Bowl. But after that quote I have lost all respect for the guy. Selfish "me" player, and not the team guy I believed. Stepping back when you should be stepping up.
Jim, he's no longer a Titan, so maybe you can express your opinion?
Jim: I like DeAndre. Spent time with him in New Orleans and he was very complimentary of the Titans, and said he enjoyed his time in Nashville. He obviously wasn't happy at the end. I'll be honest: I've been aware of what transpired on the sideline in Buffalo for months, heard he said he wasn't going back in the game, and was done with the team. The only surprise to me was he admitted it publicly, sitting behind a podium at the Super Bowl. My take: It's a bad look for him, because he did quit on the team. As much as the Titans have been bashed for the A.J. trade – and deservedly so – I don't think anyone should be complaining about the trade that shipped Hopkins to Kansas City. The team got a fifth-round pick for a guy who was disgruntled at the end, and let's face it, he didn't make much of an impact with the Chiefs. He had three catches for 29 yards the entire postseason.
Bennie Pope from Savannah, Tennessee
Question: We had the same offensive line for 3, 4 years, please get rid of them because a QB cannot be a quarterback and please don't believe in rookie quarterbacks. We not a good foundation for that right now. Find a veteran QB AND PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WANT TO PLAY FOR TENNESSEE.
Jim: Free agency begins next month, Bennie.
Blake Collins from Saltville, Virginia
Question: Hey Jim, Thank you for your work..With the number one pick...all eyes are on us right? Lol. The war room has to get this right. You know it's big time pressure on the GM but hey the man has a proven track record . I mean the team he helped build is in the SB right. Everyone is talking about Ward and Sanders..I bet they are looking at Burrow hard and long ..which they should and other vets as well. Who was our last number 1 overall pick ..was it the great Earl Campbell? Seems like we had another number 1 overall but maybe we traded before the draft ...can't remember
Jim: Looking at Burrow? Cincy's not letting him out of there. … Earl is right. The Titans had the No.1 pick in 2016 and traded it.
Michael Miles Sr. from LaVergne, Tennessee
Question: Jim great to read all you say to answer us. Very helpful. Not a question, too early for them, just a thought. I really don't have a pick on QB I will leave that up to the GM and COACH. They know the team better than I do. I just want to see a solid football team. On that is in the hunt from week one until week eighteen. The McNair and George days were great days. I just hope that the Titans can build a team both on offense and defense that takes us to the big game at the end. I will be with them either as a winning team or one like we just had. Hopefully the one we just had is in the past and not returning for years to come. Thanks Jim for all you put up with.
Jim: Appreciate it, Michael.
Cheyenne Brigance from Arlington, Tennessee
Question: Hi Jim. As always, thank you for all the great work you do for Titans fans! The best news has been hearing that Will Levis is going to be working with Jordan Palmer this summer!
Hopefully it clicks with Will and he improves tremendously. Once Will is done working with Jordan, maybe someone can get him in contact with Chris Hess next !! Josh Allen did not get really good until after he worked with them both. One last thing, hope it becomes a reality and not just a rumor but please sign Trey Smith (we need help!).
Jim: Hi Cheyenne. Keep in mind it's not the first time Will has worked with Jordan Palmer. He also spent time with his leading up to the NFL Draft. The time with him should help for sure. The new GM knows Trey well, but I'm sure Trey enjoys playing for the Chiefs, too.
Sergey Chiripko from Atlanta, Georgia
Question: I've been eyeing Kyle McCord as a late round option if we trade top pick. Did we meet with him at the Shrine Bowl? He was a standout at those practices. His game resembles Burrow/Stafford in that they are timing/anticipation guys with great football IQ/decision making, and both guys that Cally knows, so I'm curious if he's caught his attention so far? Thank you for all your work
Jim: Hey Sergey. I think it's safe to say someone with the Titans met with just about every prospect either at the Shrine or Senior Bowl, whether it was a scout, coach, or the GM.
