Weekend Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans

MailbagAskJim-(2)

NASHVILLE – Let's do it again.

The Titans return to action in preseason game No.2 vs the Seattle Seahawks tonight at Nissan Stadium.

Then we'll have just one more week until we can turn our attention to the regular season.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

It's time for this weekend's mailbag.

Let's go …

Andrew Dench from Elkhart, Indiana
Question: I understand we lost King Henry. But with our evolved passing offense why are our current RB's rated so low. Henry was amazing but wouldn't fit our style. To me it seems like we are gonna have more of a lightning and thunder duo again close to being equal to CJ2K and White. I for one am excited about this season. I have a feeling we are gonna surprise alot of people. RAN did a great job this offseason.

Jim: Hey Andrew. Tony Pollard has been in the league a while, and I think most folks realize he's a good back. Tyjae Spears flashed last year, and Titans fans know how talented he is. Still, he has a lot to prove. After all, it's been the Derrick Henry show around here for a while. But I do agree this one-two punch has a lot of potential. The offense will be a lot less predictable, and I think you're going to see these guys have success.

Eric Gray from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Question: There are numerous examples of late-round draft picks and undrafted free agents becoming pro bowl players. Although the Titans have done a great job of revamping the team, they had too many holes to fix them all in one offseason. We're supposedly weak at edge and inside linebacker. Why not play the young players and see what we have? We may be pleasantly surprised by how well one or more performs. I prefer not to use future draft capital in a trade for a high-profile edge rusher. If no one comes thru this season, then these positions rise to the top of next year's draft needs. I like how Ran is building the team. I just hope he continues to be both smart and patient.

Jim: The best players are going to play, and Ran Carthon and Company have proven they're not treating this as a rebuilding year. Depending on what officially happens with the Arden Key situation, the team may still need some help on the edge. (For the record, Jeffery Simmons tweeted on Saturday that Key won his appeal on the suspension). Rookie Jaylen Harrell is one of the young guys who could help Harold Landry and Rashad Weaver, but we'll have to wait and see how things unfold. Also, there's nothing weak about what I've seen from Kenneth Murray Jr. at ILB.

Jonathan Humphrey from Rumsey, Kentucky
Question: JIM JIM I'm back again! Its always an exciting time of year when football resumes for another season...preseason that is! I was excited to see a lot of starters play in the first game but in my opinion it seemed like there was too much playing time if that could even be a complaint? I mean you saw some of the injuries the first games in Kansas and even some of the others across the league. Why even put the "ones" out there at all and risk injury before the season starts? I just wanted your thoughts on this if i could. In my opinion (which is worthless honestly) I'd rather see our boys healthy and ready to take on the regular season. I mean I love LOVE seeing them play all the time obviously but you've seen how devastating it is on a season when we have game after game of substitutions. Good to be back Jim and as always thank you for everything you do! TITAN UP!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim: Good to hear from you again, Jonathan. I've never been a big fan of playing the starters much in the preseason myself. I just don't think it's worth the risk, and some of the momentum gained is lost with the two-week break from the time the preseason ends and the regular season starts. With that said, you're not going to see the starters on Saturday night.

Landon Branch from Buckingham, Virginia
Question: Hey Jim. Appreciate the work you do. I enjoyed the game Saturday. Will levis looks comfortable in this offense. I was wondering if the 1s will get some more playing time this week against Seattle? I'm bringing my family to their first game this coming weekend! Really excited to see the guys lower on the depth chart competing. How's the battle for wr looking? I know the first 5 are pretty locked up. But it will be interesting to see who makes it.

Jim: Hey Landon. No Will Levis tonight. It will be the Malik Willis show to start, and then Mason Rudolph. The WR battle has been interesting, even with DeAndre Hopkins and Tyler Boyd sidelined. Mason Kinsey and Jha'Quan Jackson both had really good weeks and NWI and Treylon Burks have been solid. Kyle Philips was surging himself, but now he's dealing with a hammy.

Joni Daniels from Antioch, Tennessee
Question: The atmosphere and weather for the game on Saturday was near perfect football weather. It wasn't too hot and the fans around me seem to really enjoy the game. It was an added plus that we won! Why can't we have more games during the regular season that start in the afternoon or on a Sunday night? All of our home games have always started at noon and during the months of August, September and even part of October it is too hot!!

Jim: Hi Joni. Blame TV, and the broadcast schedule across the NFL.

Curtis Brown from Hendersonville, Tennessee
Question: Hello Mr Wyatt, I hope you're doing well. Just want to say thank you for doing such a great job, you're informative, fun and energetic.
Who do you think will wind up QB2? Rudolph seems like he is playing lights out and Willis is definitely improved.
Hope I can get you on my podcast sometime to talk titans/afc south football.

Jim: Fun and energetic? Sounds like my daughter's new puppy, Scout, a Goldendoodle. But I'll take it! 😊
And, I think Mason Rudolph will be the QB2. He's completing over 80 percent of his passes in camp, and as much as Malik has improved, Mason has been even better. … Just let me know on the podcast.

Aiden Vander from Alpharetta, Georgia
Question: Hey Jim! Do you know if Coach Callahan will have a weekly show during the season like the other regime?

Jim: Yes, Aiden. Asked Mike Keith about this when I saw your question. The Brian Callahan Radio Show starts Monday at 6 p.m. on Titans Radio, and it will run every week through Monday after the final game. A TV show, 'Titans Football with Brian Callahan', will air every Tuesday on WKRN at 6:30 p.m., starting on September 10.

Hector Hernandez from Teziutlan, Puebla, Mexico
TITANS UP!!!

Cedric Gray necesita recuperarse. Eres un gran y leal seguidor. Tener un buen fin de semana.

Keith Dilbeck from Ducktown, Tennessee
Question: Hey, Jim. Hope you're doing well. Haven't heard you mention Sam Schnee in any of your reports. I know with the depth of our receiving corps he's on the outside looking in. Based on what you've seen has he done enough to earn a spot on the Practice Squad? Thanks for all your work and updates. TITAN UP!!

Jim: Hi Keith. I've been charting all the throws – and catches – in camp and Sam has seven catches in the 7-on-7 and team drills combined through the first 11 practice sessions. The problem for Sam is the team is deep at the position, and it he's competing against guys like Mason Kinsey, Kyle Philips and Jha'Quan Jackson, who have more experience and are getting more opportunities. Look for Sam on Saturday night – he should get a bunch of playing time.

Jerry Knox from Lawrenceburg, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim, straight and to the point. As always, we enjoyed the game, but when you have parked on site for years, that was a fiasco that I hope ownership addresses for the new stadium. The other thing is, where was Lance Smith?

Jim: Different times for sure, Jerry, but these are changing times. The new stadium is going to be spectacular; the parking situation isn't going to be as good as it used to be. Just telling it like it is. Lance isn't back this year. He's a great guy and he did a great job.

Have a great weekend everyone!
