NASHVILLE – The Titans selected Miami linebacker/safety James Williams in the seventh round of Saturday's NFL Draft.
Williams was selected with the 242nd overall pick.
"It's a blessing," Williams said on a zoom call after being selected. "Only God can control where I went, and it so happened He chose for me to be in Nashville. I am glad to bring my talents to where He wants me to be."
Williams played safety with the Hurricanes, but he worked primarily at linebacker while at Senior Bowl practices after adding weight from the end of the season to work on a position change.
Williams said he played around 220 to 225 pounds in college, but said he's around 228 pounds right now.
At the NFL Combine, Williams was listed at 6-4, 231 pounds.
The Titans want him to play linebacker.
"It is a good adjustment," Williams said. "I have to do some learning, have to start over from square one, like I have to learn football all over again. But I am ready for it, embracing it, and ready to put my talents on display. I'll try to do everything I can do to make this team great."
Williams played in 33 games, with 29 starts, over three seasons with the Hurricanes, and he tallied 162 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, along with four interceptions.
In 2023, Williams started all 12 games and totaled 73 tackles and an interception, along with two forced fumbles. He was also credited with five pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
As a four-star recruit coming out of high school, as a safety, Williams chose Miami over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCF, USF, Vanderbilt and West Virginia, among others.
