Titans HC Brian Callahan: When Will Levis is Healthy, He's Our Starting Quarterback

NASHVILLE – Titans coach Brian Callahan isn't exactly sure of the results from tests on quarterback Will Levis.

Levis, who suffered a shoulder injury in Monday night's game vs the Dolphins, was scheduled to undergo treatments and have the shoulder further examined back in Nashville. But because of the team's late return from Miami, some things remained unclear midday on Tuesday.

Callahan, however, once again left no doubt about his plan at quarterback moving forward: When Levis is healthy, he'll be the team's starter.

And, he's hopeful that will be on October 13 against the Colts, when the Titans return from the bye.

Levis was injured in the first quarter of Monday's game, and did not return. Back-up Mason Rudolph replaced Levis, and he guided the Titans to a 31-12 victory over the Dolphins.

"I appreciate Mason's professionalism, and I appreciate how prepared he was, and ready to go into the game," Callahan said at his afternoon press conference on Tuesday. "But Will is our starting quarterback. I said it last night, and I'll reiterate it again: When (Will) is healthy, he is starting. And, hopefully he's healthy for Indy and we're ready to roll, and he's the starting quarterback."

Callahan said it's about this season, and the big picture.

"It's hard to play quarterback in the NFL, as everybody knows," Callahan said. "There does take some development, guys make young-player mistakes, you see it all across the league right now. And, we're going to find out everything about Will that we can. And, he's going to continue to grow and get better and play better. He needs to play better for us. And, at the end of the day, I believe that he will.

"That's where I am at with that whole thing. There is no controversy. There is no second-guessing. That's what is happening. That's probably as clear as I can state it."

In four starts this season, Levis has completed 67-of-98 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns, but also with six interceptions and a total of nine turnovers total. Levis was 3-of-4 for 25 yards with an interception before leaving the game with an injury.

Rudolph was 9-of-17 for 85 yards against the Dolphins. He threw just three passes in the second half on a night when the Titans picked up 142 of their 244 yards on the ground.

"We didn't ask a lot of Mason in the second half of that game," Callahan said. "I thought we were running the ball well, and we wanted to keep doing that. … Mason managed the game well. He did a nice job of just making sure we didn't have anything disastrous happen. ... He did a nice job of making sure we were clean operationally, and the ball was secured, and it was good."
