Observations from Titans vs. Seahawks Joint Practice on Wednesday

NASHVILLE – The Titans and Seahawks are practicing twice together in Nashville this week leading up to Saturday's preseason game at Nissan Stadium.

On Wednesday, the two teams took the field for the first session.

Here's a look at what stood out:

-The Titans and Seahawks started off the session with their own stretch and individual periods. The two teams worked together in 1-on-1s with WRs and DBs. Using two fields, the Titans offense worked against the Seahawks defense on one field, and the Titans defense worked against the Seahawks offense on another. After a 16-play team period on each field, the two teams worked in 7-on-7 periods, and with o-linemen battling d-linemen. Then came a special teams period, with field goals, and punting drills. Following a hydration break, the teams worked in two more team periods with a focus on 2nd and 3rd downs, before another special teams period. Practice concluded with a "Move the Ball" unscripted period taking place on the two fields.

-There were no significant injuries for the Titans in today's session. Coach Brian Callahan said a number of players dealt with cramping, including receiver Treylon Burks at the end. Burks left the session late with trainers, but he returned to do an interview with 104.5 The Zone after practice and appeared to be just fine. Tackle JC Latham also dealt with cramps toward the end of the session, but he finished.

-I spent most of my time watching the Titans on offense, but I tried to position myself in between the two fields where I could see both. I had a better vantage point of the offense, which explains why my notes are heavier on that side of the ball.

-Titans quarterback Will Levis completed 15-of-22 passes in the team periods, and 4-of-5 in the 7-on-7 work, making him 19-of-27 for the day. Levis took a chance on a number of deep balls and didn't connect, but he was efficient on shorter and mid-range throws. In the team's first nine practices of training camp, Levis completed 106-of-150 passes with five interceptions in 7-on-7 and team periods combined in camp.

-Quarterback Mason Rudolph was 13-of-16 in the team work, and 4-of-4 in the 7-on-7 work, making him 17-of-20 for the day. Rudolph saw a few of his shorter passes turn into big plays for the Titans. I'll get to some of those shortly. In the team's first nine practices of training camp, Rudolph completed 82-of-98 with two interceptions in the 7-on-7 and team drills in camp.

-Quarterback Malik Willis was 8-of-13 in the team work, and 2-of-3 in the 7-on-7, making him 10-of-16 for the day. In the team's first nine practices of training camp, Willis completed 61-of-93 in 7-on-7 and team work so far in camp, with three interceptions.

-Rookie receiver Jha'Quan Jacksom was one of the standouts on the day offensively. Jackson caught a short pass from Rudolph in the 7-on-7 period, and he turned it up-field for a would-be score. Later, in a team period, Jackson did it again as he caught a pass from Rudolph and outraced everyone to the end zone for a 70-yard touchdown. I had Jackson with three catches on the day, and that doesn't include a 1-on-1 period when he made several plays.

-Defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons looked beastly even from afar. And, I could hear him from afar. Simmons busted into the backfield on several occasions for what would have been sacks in games. I heard this from Simmons, loud and clear, as he yelled to the Seatle sideline about the o-lineman trying to keep him out of the backfield: "Get that man some help! He can't block me!"

-The Titans had trouble containing Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf, who got open and made a ton of catches.

-Titans defensive back Eric Garror had an interception on a deflected pass, and it looked to me like it would have been a Pick-6 as he raced the other way. I noticed Garror on a blitz, and a would-be sack.

-Running back Tyjae Spears had a couple of really nice runs, and he had four catches on the day. Spears also took a pretty vicious hit from Seattle's Ty Okada after making one catch, and I thought it might spark a brawl. But cooler heads prevailed.

-Also saw a nice run from Tony Pollard.

-I mentioned Burks early. He opened practice with a long catch on a 1-on-1 period, and he had several tough catches on the day. Burks appeared to lose the football after making one catch, and it would've been a fumble in a game. Burks slowed down on a deep ball later, and after going to the ground, he left with trainers. It was a scary moment at the time. But word that it was just cramping surely eased the fears of Titans fans.

-Kyle Philips was killing it in the 1-on-1s.

-Nick Westbrook-Ikhine caught four passes in the 7-on-7 and team drills combined.

-Tight end Josh Whyle led the team with five catches on the day, and he got thrown to the ground after a couple of them. Again, I thought it might lead to a scrap, but guys kept their composure.

-I also counted five grabs for tight end Nick Vannett, and that was the same number of catches I'd totaled for him through the first nine practices of camp.

-It was a big day for the tight ends. In addition to grabs for Whyle and Vannett, David Martin-Robinson also had four catches.

-Edge Rashad Weaver had several nice rushes in a team period, including one when he batted the football to the ground on a Geno Smith pass.

-Caleb Murphy also batted down a pass on a rush.

-The Titans provided a whole lot of pressure on Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell.

-Saw edge rushers Harold Landry and Shane Ray with pressures.

-Linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. stuffed the run on several plays.

-It wasn't the best day for receiver Calvin Ridley, but I can't say it was all on him. Ridley was guilty of at least one drop, but Levis overthrew him on a couple of deep balls after he'd gotten open downfield.

-I thought receiver Bryce Oliver had a good day. The undrafted receiver from Youngstown State went up high to snag a pass across the middle, and he made some others plays as well.

-Receiver Mason Kinsey got the fellas riled up with an aggressive play on special teams.

- Kicker Nick Folk was a perfect 6-of-6 in a field goal period, and he's now 26-of-28 on field goals so far in camp. Kicker Brayden Narveson is 15-of-19 in camp.

-Receiver Tyler Boyd (foot bruise), cornerback Caleb Farley (hamstring), receiver DeAndre Hopkins (knee), Chidobe Awuzie (calf), cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (rest), linebacker JoJo Domann (back), linebacker Cedric Gray (shoulder), linebacker Luke Gifford (concussion) and receiver Tre'Shaun Harrison did not practice.

-Safety Jamal Adams, tight end Nick Vannett, defensive back Anthony Kendall and offensive lineman Leroy Watson all returned to practice.

-I heard Jamal Adams chirping all day at his former teammates.

-Linebacker Garret Wallow, out for the season with a pec injury, also did not practice. He has not yet been placed on Injured Reserve.

-Receiver Colton Dowell began camp on the team's Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and did not practice.

-Veteran reporters/analysts Adam Caplan and Greg Cosell attended today's practice, and so did ESPN's Ryan Clark, former Jaguars back Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder from the Pivot Podcast. Steve Palazzolo, formerly with Pro Football Focus, was also on hand.

-MTSU Coach Derek Mason attended today's practice.

-Former Titans Derrick Mason, Keith Bulluck, Brad Hopkins and Donnie Nickey attended today's practice.

-Hall of Famer Steve Hutchinson, who works in scouting with the Seahawks, was at today's session.

-Former Titans linebacker Tim Shaw attended today's practice.

-Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk attended today's practice.

-Current season ticket members and prospective season ticket members, along with sponsors, were among those who attended today's practice.

-Game officials worked today's practice.

-Callahan said the teams will work in red zone periods on Thursday, along with 2-minute work.

Next open practice: Thursday, 10-12:15 with Seahawks.
