From the NFL Combine: Colorado's Travis Hunter Makes His Case to Be Picked First in the NFL Draft, as a Two-Way Player

INDIANAPOLIS – Travis Hunter had no interest in talking about teams he's meeting with here at the NFL Combine.

Every time he was asked about a specific team, Hunter responded with: "Next question."

Surrounded by a big group of reporters on Thursday morning, Hunter also dismissed another question about the financial precedent he could set in the NFL by playing on both sides of the football.

"That's not my focus right now," Hunter said.

What the Colorado star – and last year's Heisman Trophy winner – did make clear on Thursday was his interest in playing on both sides of the football at the next level.

"They say nobody has ever done it for real the way I do it," said Hunter, who said he's done meetings here as a receiver, and at defensive back. "I tell them I'm just different. I'm just a different person."

And, Hunter said he'd love to be the first player picked in the NFL Draft.

"It should be important," Hunter said. "It was one of my dreams, to go No.1, and to be the best I can be."

A first-team All-Big 12 performer at cornerback at receiver at Colorado, Hunter averaged 111.5 snaps per game in 2023-2024. In 2024, Hunter finished with 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, but he was also a game-changing cornerback, as he led the Buffaloes with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups.

Hunter was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and he was first-team All-Big 12 at cornerback and receiver.

Earlier this week, Titans Coach Brian Callahan and General Manager Mike Borgonzi both raved about Hunter, and the impact he could make the NFL. Callahan said it's "very realistic" to think Hunter could play on both sides of the football in the NFL.

The Titans, of course, are currently scheduled to pick first overall.

"He's a unique player," Callahan said of Hunter. "There's not a whole lot of other players you could compare to what he's done. There's not many guys who have played that many snaps on both sides of the ball. And you watch his tape and see his ability to play both at a really high level."

Borgonzi called Hunter "a special player."

"We were watching him, and I don't know if there's anybody who has ever done what he's done in the modern day football, playing both offense and defense during the course of the season," Borgonzi said of Hunter. "He's definitely a special player."

With a smile, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Hunter agrees that he's different.

In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy, Hunter was also named AP College Football Player of the Year, Biletnikoff Award (best WR), Bednarik Award (top defender), Lott IMPACT Trophy (top defensive player who exhibits Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity), Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) and Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

While Callahan said Hunter has the ability to play on both sides of the football, he anticipated he'd start at cornerback in the NFL and "then you find ways to interject him into the offense as he gets more comfortable, he plays more and more offensively."

Hunter plans to work as a receiver and defensive back during the pre-draft process. In the NFL, he'll be ready to compete wherever his next team wants him to play.

"I have my own unique play style," he said. "I play on both sides of the ball, and not many people in the NFL have done it. I'd like to play both sides of the football, and if they give me an opportunity to play on both sides, I am going to play both sides.

"I'm just a diehard for football – I love to compete."
