Titans Discuss Needs, Areas for Improvement, One Week Before Free Agency Officially Begins

NASHVILLE – Free agency begins next week.

The NFL Draft is set for next month.

The Titans, along with teams across the league, are doing their homework, and getting ready.

Coming off a season when the team finished 3-14, which put the Titans in a position to pick first overall, the team has plenty of holes, and needs.

At the NFL Combine, Coach Brian Callahan and General Manager Mike Borgonzi were both asked about the team's biggest needs, and where they believe the team needs to get better.

"We have to get better up front, on offense," Callahan said. "We have to be able to protect the quarterback. Defensively, we have to be able to sack the quarterback.

"And, we don't have a lot of receivers under contract, so that's an area we have to find. And, who is going to be the other linebacker inside with (Kenneth Murray)? So, there's some spots that are open.

"We have some young players we are excited about, but ultimately, probably the key points are: What are we going to do at the quarterback position? And, on our two fronts, where do we keep adding players there? And, the receiver/linebacker positions, there are some holes we have to fill there. I think there's plenty of (holes), unfortunately."

The Titans held three weeks of draft meetings leading up to the NFL Combine.

This week, some of those draft prospects will begin arriving in town for 30 visits.

Free agency officially kicks off next Wednesday, when some questions will be answered.

And, some of the team's holes will begin to be filled.

"Building the trenches, getting offensive linemen, defensive linemen, building that foundation," Borgonzi responded when asked where the team needs to get better. "And certainly, at some of the skill positions as well, receiver. Adding more depth to the tight end room. There's a lot of holes."

In his first six weeks on the job, Borgonzi said he's already met a number of the team's returning players, including quarterback Will Levis, tackle JC Latham and receiver Calvin Ridley.

He can sense players are ready for a change in results.

"I think they are excited for the new process we have in place, player acquisition," Borgonzi said. "You can feel the want-to to be better, and they want to be a part of it. They want us to get this roster right and do something special."
