Titans use Messages to Encourage Youth to Attend School

Nashville, Tenn. — Several Titans players teamed with representatives from Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools this week to help spread the word about the importance of school attendance.

Representatives from the school system's Office of Innovation visited Baptist Sports Park Friday to gather voice messages from Titans players as part of their "Celebrity Wake-Up Calls Campaign" that encourages the importance of school attendance.

Every year one out of every three high school students will fail to graduate from high school with their classmates – putting them on a path to poverty, unemployment and hardship. There is no greater predictor of high school graduation rates than attendance rates. Studies show that students with more than 10 absences in a school year risk falling behind. Students with more than 20 absences have only a one-in-five chance of graduating.

Tim Shaw, Alterraun Verner, Damian Williams, and Will Witherspoon understand the value of education and school attendance and participated in the initiative by recording messages that will be communicated to students. Each of these players received degrees in various majors from great institutions. Additionally, Witherspoon is currently obtaining an advanced degree through the George Washington University School of Business STAR E.M.B.A. program.

The recorded messages will be sent to the students throughout the Metro Public Schools. Some schools are high-priority schools in the district, which include:  Bailey Middle, John Early Middle, Gra-Mar Middle, Buena Vista Elementary, Robert Churchwell Elementary, and Napier Elementary.
