NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Titans and United Way of Metropolitan Nashville teamed up to provide much-needed items for some of Nashville's most at-risk mothers yesterday through the inaugural Titan Up for Tots community baby shower.
At team headquarters, Titans players, staff and cheerleaders assembled 1,500 diaper bags full of items that new mothers need the most.
Players were divided by position group with each group responsible for placing one of the following items in each diaper bag: diapers, wipes, onesies and blankets.
"It's a great feeling to know that a newborn baby is going to have the proper amount of [supplies] – whether it be diapers, wipes or a blanket – and to know we were a part of that," Titans cornerback Jason McCourty said. "I think you can just go home and kind of give your own kids a hug or a kiss and know you made a difference in somebody else's life today."
In addition to baby supplies, each diaper bag was stuffed with a hand written note from a member of the Titans cheerleading squad and informational materials on programs that support families and children, such as the Imagination Library, VITA and the 2-1-1 Helpline.
"We're going to take all of these bags...1,500 bags that are going to go to 1,500 moms, and we're going to make sure that our most vulnerable moms and babies start off in the right way," said Eric Dewey, President and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. "Having the players, and the cheerleaders, and the staff here at the Titans, it just means the world to our community and we're really grateful for that."
The assembled diaper bags will be delivered to at-risk patients at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, United Way Family Resource Centers and domestic violence partners selected by the Titans.
