FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. –** Corey Davis is a big fan of Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota.
On Monday, Mariota said he's looking forward to working with Davis, the team's first-round pick out of Western Michigan, as well.
"I am excited," Mariota said during a Titans Caravan stop at the Fort Campbell PX. "I am excited for our entire draft class. I think we brought in a lot of really good players, and it will be fun getting to know them and build relationships that will hopefully allow us to have some success on the field."
Davis, selected fifth overall, caught 97 balls for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, and his 5,278 career receiving yards is an FBS record. He ranks second in NCAA history in career receiving touchdowns with 52.
The 6-3, 209-pounder was one of several offensive weapons selected by the Titans early in the NFL Draft. In addition to Davis, the Titans selected a pair of potential playmakers in the third round in Western Kentucky receiver Taywan Taylor and Florida International tight end Jonnu Smith.
Titans general manager Jon Robinson kidded over the weekend he expects Mariota to repay him with a regular shipment of Omaha Steaks.
"We'll work something out," Mariota said with a smile. "(The additions) will create competition within our team, and eventually that will make us better and that is all you can really ask for."
Linebacker Derrick Morgan, who was also on the Caravan stop, said there's reason to be excited.
"I know he was happy,'' a smiling Morgan said, pointing to Mariota. "I think everything went well. I think we got the pieces that we needed, and overall it went great. … I think it was what we needed."
Mariota was asked about USC cornerback Adoree' Jackson, the team's 18th overall pick who should also provide a boost on special teams.
"I was at Oregon and two years ago he returned one all the way to the house," Mariota said. "I have seen that guy up close and personal and we are excited to have him."
Mariota traveled to Oregon over the weekend to see his younger brother play in the team's spring game. He said he was in between flights, keeping track of the draft on his phone.
"I was very tuned in to what we were doing and very pleased with what happened,'' Mariota said. "It's excitement. It is all about making this team better, and these guys are going to come in and they are going to compete and that is all you can really as for."
As for himself, Mariota said he's still on track while working his way back from the fractured fibula he suffered in the team's December 24 contest at Jacksonville.
Mariota said he's jogging, and reminded "it's a process."
"As I continue forward I'll be running soon," Mariota said.
Roughly 1,000 soldiers and their families turned out for autographs and pictures at the Fort Campbell PX.
Many of them began lining up early in the morning for the stop, which included general manager Jon Robinson, head coach Mike Mularkey, T-Rac and Titans cheerleaders in addition to Mariota and Morgan.
"It is incredible," Mariota said. "It is an awesome event, an opportunity for us to give back. Especially to be here with the military, I am really happy that I got the chance to be here. You get to pay tribute to people who risk their lives every day for us, and make the ultimate sacrifice. We are having a lot of fun being able to do this and it is a great opportunity to be able to meet them."
