NASHVILLE – Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has made two additional hires on his coaching staff for the 2021 season.
On Thursday, the Titans added Erik Frazier as offensive skill assistant and Jason Houghtaling as offensive line assistant to the coaching staff.
Frazier, most recently the wide receivers/pass game coordinator (2019-20) for Montana State, has seven years of college coaching experience. Prior to coaching at Montana State, Frazier had stops at Western Illinois (2018, receivers), Northwestern (2017, grad assistant), Dayton (2016, receivers), and Delaware Valley (2014-15, wide receivers/quarterbacks). Frazier also spent time with three NFL teams during training camp as the Bill Walsh Minority Intern – the New York Giants (2019), Minnesota Vikings (2018), and Kansas City Chiefs. (2017). As a player, Frazier was a Division II All-American wide receiver at Kutztown University, the same school that produced Hall of Fame receiver Andre Reed of the Buffalo Bills.
During Frazier's time with the Vikings, Titans assistant Todd Downing coached tight ends in Minnesota before being hired by the Titans a year later. Downing was recently promoted to offensive coordinator with the Titans, replacing Arthur Smith, who was named head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
Houghtaling (pronounced HO-tail-ling), most recently the offensive line coach at Colgate (2020), has 14 years of college coaching experience, including five seasons (2015-19) as the head coach at Wagner. During his time at Wagner, Houghtaling served as running backs coach (2006), offensive line coach (2007-08), offensive coordinator (2012 and 2014), and head coach (2015-19). He also spent one season (2013) at Cornell as the offensive coordinator.
During his time as the head coach at Wagner, he coached 28 All-Northeast Conference selections, two offensive linemen (Greg Senat and Matt Diaz) who spent time on NFL rosters and a two-time conference defensive player of the year (Cam Gill). Houghtaling graduated from the University of Binghamton in 2004, after starting his college career at Lafayette. A native of Windsor, NY, he started his coaching career in the high school ranks at his alma mater, Windsor Central High School.
Last month, in announcing Downing's promotion to offensive coordinator, Vrabel also elevated Shane Bowen to defensive coordinator after he led the defense a year ago as outside linebackers coach.
In addition to elevating Downing and Bowen, Vrabel promoted Luke Steckel to tight ends coach, Ryan Crow to outside linebackers coach and Matt Edwards to assistant special teams coach. The Titans also hired Kenechi Udeze as a defensive line assistant last month. He'll work under current defensive line coach Terrell Williams.
