"I'm excited to take these kids on a once in a lifetime shopping spree, but more importantly, I want them to learn that hard work is rewarded," said Thornton. "I know essays aren't the most fun to write, but by earning their opportunity, they can begin to understand that their efforts have value."
From Thornton's generosity, each youth is given a $200 gift card to purchase items for themselves or family members. In addition to the gift cards, the youth got dinner from a local restaurant to boost the student's energy before their shopping spree and Thornton provided drawstring backpacks and team posters for each of the youth as well.

"One of the kids in his essay talked about philanthropy and what that meant to him and that was exciting for me to know that he understands it's not all about yourself but about others as well," said Thornton. "Knowing how to be kind to others, respect others and helping others in need is something I enjoy doing and its good to see that the kids are understanding that message."
