INDIANAPOLIS – Titans general manager Jon Robinson didn't give too much away during his 16-minute media session here on Wednesday, but he did drop a few nuggets.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, Robinson discussed free agency and the NFL Draft, and some of the team's current personnel.
Robinson said the team has discussed adding a veteran in free agency to a young receiving corps.
Robinson said the Titans have had some discussions with several of the team's players scheduled to become free agents after he was asked specifically about guard Quinton Spain.
He made it clear the team is interested in re-signing safety Kenny Vaccaro, who is among the players scheduled to become a free agent next month.
"Kenny came in and played really good football for us," Robinson said. "We are kind of working through several things now with him, with that position group as a whole. There's some guys in free agency, Kenny being a primary target, and guys in the draft and we'll kind of see how that … plays out."
Robinson was asked about the chances of Jack Conklin or Dennis Kelly competing for a starting guard spot in 2019, and he said he sees both players as "primarily offensive tackles." Robinson said recently signed lineman Hroniss Grasu has played mostly center during his career, but has played some guard.
"At the end of the day we want to get the best five guys out there," Robinson said.
Robinson said the draft should provide some nice options for the team at several positions.
"Much has been made about the defensive line obviously," Robinson said of the draft's strengths. "On the offensive side, the line of scrimmage on that side is pretty good as well. There's some good players on that side of the ball. There's some playmakers offensively, at the tight end position and receiver."
After signing cornerback Malcolm Butler and running back Dion Lewis right out of the gate last year in free agency, Robinson said the Titans will explore their options during the three-day negotiating period to determine how aggressive they'll be this year.
"Just kind of seeing what the market dictates, seeing what direction certain positions groups and headed down," Robinson said, "and see how we factor in that."
With the NFL Draft set to be in Nashville in April, might Robinson try to make a splash and move up?
Well, time will tell on that, too.
The Titans are scheduled to pick 19th overall in the first round of the draft.
"I don't know," Robinson said with a smile. "You take every situation and you examine it and try and do what's best for the team. There's times where last year we moved up a couple of times, and got a couple of guys, and there's times we move back, too.
"So it's really: What's the cost from a picks standpoint? What's that going to cost you to move up or back in the draft? But also being mindful of the pool of players that you're trying to add. If there's four players that you really like (when you're pick is coming up), then you better not trade back seven spots because there's a chance that four of your guys could be gone."
