Titans-Bears Flashback: Efficient Passes Key Win

Each week this season, Titans Online is taking a look back at a game in franchise history against the upcoming opponent.

Nov. 9, 2008: Titans 21, Bears 14

This flashback goes to Tennessee's ninth consecutive win to start the 2008 season.

The Titans relied on efficient passing and solid defense to compensate for a Bears defense that was difficult to run against to claim the win at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Kerry Collins completed 30 of 41 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions for a passer rating of 108.7.

Collins connected with tight end Bo Scaife 10 times for 78 yards and one score that tied the game at seven with 8:39 left in the second quarter. Collins also found Brandon Jones eight times for 82 yards and Justin Gage four times for 47 yards and a TD that gave the Titans the lead for good less than four minutes into the second half.

LenDale White added a 2-yard touchdown run with 12:06 remaining in the game to put Tennessee up 21-7, and the Titans held on, despite a 1-yard scoring run by Bears QB Rex Grossman with 4:55 left.

Chicago forced a punt on Tennessee's ensuing possession and got the ball at the Tennessee 41-yard line with 3:12 remaining. The Bears gained nine yards on first down with a pass from Grossman to Greg Olsen, but Tony Brown tackled Matt Forte for a 3-yard loss on the next play, and the defense forced consecutive incompletions by Grossman to give the ball back to the Titans. Brown's clutch tackle was one of seven tackles for loss made by Tennessee on the day. The Titans also benefitted from an interception by Chris Hope.

Collins completed his final attempt of the day, a 10-yarder to Scaife, on third-and-5 before the two-minute warning to allow the Titans to run out the clock.

The Bears held the Titans to 20 rushing yards on 29 attempts (0.7 yards per carry), but also struggled to run the football. Tennessee held Chicago to 78 rushing yards on 24 carries (3.3 per carry).

The Titans also controlled the clock by possessing the ball 33:16 and held the Bears to 3-for-14 (21 percent) on third down.
