Nashville, Tenn. — Sen'Derrick Marks has made giving back to the community a top priority this season.
The Titans' defensive tackle, with support of his teammates Jurrell Casey, Robert Johnson, Colin McCarthy, and Fernando Velasco, continued the spirit of the season and recently hosted a holiday dinner for the women and children of the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, in addition to other families in need at Cabana Restaurant.
"I have done a lot with the YWCA because they do great things in the community," Marks said. "Holidays are all about love, caring and giving back. My mother always said, 'If you can't give a gift, you can always give a card. If you can't buy a card, you can always draw one,' so this time of the year it's all about showing someone you love and care, and this is what this event was about."
The event also included the students from Stepping Start, a program from his Setting Marks Foundation. The youth gained a valuable volunteer opportunity by ushering participants to their seats, serving food and even performing their step dance routine. The families were also serenaded by up-and-coming Disney star Tay Barton.
All the families were treated with great hospitality as they enjoyed the holiday music, wonderful ambiance and great service. Afterward they enjoyed spending time with the players, posing for pictures and receiving autographs. All the women and children were extremely appreciative and enjoyed the event completely.
About Stepping Start
Stepping Start is an after school program designed to encourage physical and intellectual development through "stepping." Stepping is a form of dance using strong and precise movements. Stepping Start uses fundraising to help support the participants' dues and uniform fees.
In this program, youth will have hands-on assistance with homework and go through a leadership development program. The team will compete in local and regional step competitions as well as participate in service learning projects such as "Global Youth Day."
