On the Roster: Second Rounders

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Four of the five second-round picks on the Titans' roster have joined Tennessee in the past two years via the draft or free agency.

The Titans have drafted linebackers in the second round of each of the past two drafts, selecting Zach Brown with the 52nd overall pick in 2012 a year after tabbing Akeem Ayers at 39th overall in 2011. Tennessee also brought in a pair of second-round picks this offseason by signing guard Andy Levitre, who was drafted by Buffalo in 2009, and safety Bernard Pollard, who was selected by Kansas City in 2006 and spent the past two seasons with Baltimore where he helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII.

Michael Roos, the Titans' fixture at left tackle since his selection in 2005, is the other player who was drafted in the second round.

Brown and Ayers, along with fourth-rounder Colin McCarthy, were one of the strongest parts of Tennessee's team in 2012, and Titans coaches plan to build around those players for a considerable amount of years.

Brown seemed to increase his level of play each week, culminating in the season finale when he returned interceptions 79 and 30 yards for touchdowns against Jacksonville. He started 13 of 16 games as a rookie and recorded 93 tackles (73 solo and six for loss), 5.5 sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Ayers has 198 tackles (145 solo and seven for loss) through his first two seasons that included 30 starts in 32 games. He's also recorded 15 quarterback pressures, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception that occurred against Miami when he, Brown and McCarthy each had an interception.

Andy Levitre, who joined the Titans as a free agent this offseason, was drafted by Buffalo in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Click here for a slideshow of Titans who were second-round picks.

Levitre was one of the most-sought free agents this offseason and the first signed by the Titans. He started all 64 pro games in four seasons with Buffalo, and helped an offensive line have success running the football and protecting the passer.

Pollard is expected to bring an intensity to Tennessee's secondary that's built on toughness and experience. He has started 85 of 105 career games, recorded nine sacks and nine interceptions, forced 11 fumbles and recovered eight in seven previous seasons with Kansas City, Houston and Baltimore.

Roos earned selection to the Pro Bowl and was named an All Pro after the 2008 season and has been a hallmark of consistency. He's started all 127 games he's played and missed just one in his career (this past season because of an emergency appendectomy).

The Titans are scheduled to have one pick in the second round (40th overall) of this year's NFL Draft on Friday. The three-day event starts Thursday, and Tennessee has nine selections. Click here to visit Titans Draft Central.
