NASHVILLE – The Titans hit the field on Wednesday at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park for their fifth day of organized team activities.
Here's a look at what stood out from Wednesday:
-Running back Derrick Henry, who has missed OTAs in past years, has been present for all five of the OTAs so far this offseason and his workload has increased along the way. Henry is working with a new position coach, after the team hired Justin Outten as run game coordinator/running backs coach as former RBs coach Tony Dews moved to tight ends coach.
-I spoke to Outten about joining the Titans, and his thoughts on Henry.
-Big defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was also at work again on Wednesday, and he was easily the most vocal player on the field. Simmons was relentless on a day he felt like the defense dominated the offense. At one point, Simmons and tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere became engaged in a pretty lively conversation after a play, and I don't think they were talking about vacationing together this summer.
-Quarterback Ryan Tannehill had another good day, and his favorite target continues to be receiver Treylon Burks. It seems like Tannehill connects with Burks at the start of every period, and I haven't seen Burks drop a ball intended for him yet in the open OTAs.
-I caught a pretty funny moment on film after tight end Chig Okonkwo caught a pass one-handed during individual drills. The previously mentioned Dews was not impressed, telling him to quit showing off for the cameras and to instead catch the ball with two hands.
-Running back Tyjae Spears is sure fun to watch in these practices. He's been catching the ball well, and it doesn't take him long to turn on the jets while putting moves on defenders. Spears showed off some nifty moves on Wednesday.
-I do think the defense won the day. I counted at least three DBs with near interceptions, but all three footballs hit the ground. Still, the defense was swarming, playing with energy and limiting big plays.
-Defensive back Eric Garror had one of the near picks, on a Malik Willis pass intended for Tre'Shaun Harris.
-Linebacker Otis Reese IV nearly got Will Levis, but he also let the ball escape his grasp.
-Safety Tyreque Jones had a chance to intercept Willis late in the session, but he couldn't haul the ball in either.
-One play after throwing a pass that should've been picked off, Willis made his best throw of the day late when the connected with Okonkwo on a bullet across the middle of the field.
-Levis showed some inconsistency as well. While he made several nice throws, he was also off target on a few, and the last play of the practice was ugly, as he mishandled the snap and fell to the ground as he got tangled up with an o-lineman.
-Kicker Trey Wolff, an undrafted free agent from Texas Tech, has been impressive early. Wolff was a perfect 8-of-8 on his field goal attempts from 31, 33, 42, 39, 50, 33, 44 and 54 yards on Wednesday, and I had him 8-of-8 in last week's open OTA as well, although I will admit I was viewing from the side, and it was hard to tell on a few. But by my unofficial count, Wolff is 16-of-16 in the two open sessions. Kicker Caleb Shudak, meanwhile, didn't have an attempt today.
-Running backs Jonathan Ward and Julius Chestnut flashed with the football in their hands, Ward turning on the speed after catching a pass out of the backfield.
-Receiver Gavin Holmes went up high to make a catch.
-All of the OTAs are voluntary, and overall attendance has been good so far. Not spotted at Wednesday's session (either because of injury or because players are working out on their own): CB Caleb Farley, CB Kristian Fulton, CB Sean Murphy-Bunting, S Kevin Byard, S Amani Hooker, OLB Harold Landry, OL Dillon Radunz, TE Trevon Wesco and DL Denico Autry. LB Luke Gifford was present, but not practicing.
-Former University of Tennessee and Titans tight end Luke Stocker continues to work with the team's tight ends this offseason as an intern.
-Defensive lineman Teair Tart hasn't yet signed his tender as a restricted free agent, but he did sign a waiver and he continues to practice with the team this offseason.
-Former Titans linebacker Wesley Woodyard, now with the NFLPA, attended today's practice.
-The Titans are scheduled for OTA No.6 on Friday, but that session is closed to media.
