Observations From Titans Minicamp on Thursday

Generic-Titans-News-Story---2023

NASHVILLE – The Titans hit the field on Thursday at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park for the third day of a three-day minicamp.

Al three sessions were open to media.

Here's a look at what stood out from Thursday:

-The offense bounced back in grand fashion today.

A day after the defense dominated a red zone period, the offense – and quarterback Will Levis – came back swinging in Thursday's session.

Levis was 7-of-10 in his two 7-on-7 periods, including 4-of-5 in the final session, after going 3-of-8 in Wednesday's session. In the three minicamp sessions combined, Levis went 16-of-28.

"Offensively, we bounced back from a not great day yesterday in 7-on-7 in the red zone – the defense kind of kicked our teeth in," Titans Coach Brian Callahan said. "Today they came out with good energy, it was much better."

Levis was especially sharp on Thursday, the biggest play a throw to tight end Chig Okonkwo that went for a big gain. He was victimized by a drop.

-Quarterback Mason Rudolph was good himself, going 4-of-5 in his lone 7-on-7 period, including a 58-yard touchdown strike to tight end Thomas Odukoya.

Rudolph also completed a deep ball to receiver Kyle Philips down the sideline.

-Quarterback Malik Willis was just 1-of-5 in his 7-on-7 period, his only completion going to running back Jabari Small on a short toss.

After practice, Callahan said Rudolph and Willis are competing for the No.2 spot behind Levis.

"They'll both get a fair shake at the 2 job," Callahan said. "They'll split reps pretty evenly, and they'll get a chance to play quite a bit in the preseason."

-Tight end Josh Whyle started the day off with a nice, diving catch on a Levis pass across the middle.

-Receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has made some plays this offseason, but he dropped a Levis pass right in his hands in the first 7-on-7 period.

-Linebacker James Williams had a nice break-up on a Rudolph pass intended for receiver Sam Schnee.

-Linebacker Otis Reese IV broke up a Levis pass intended for running back Tony Pollard.

-The Titans held a situational walkthrough the second half of practice, a period when the team worked on very specific points of emphasis that come up during a game, or season.

-Callahan said on Tuesday every player reported for minicamp, even if some of the players weren't on the field.

Not spotted on the field at Thursday's minicamp: Tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat and receiver Colton Dowell.

-Defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was present, but he did not take part in practice.

-Reporter Easton Freeze, host of @HotReadPod and a contributor for @BroadwayTN, had his Jack Dundee moment in Thursday's session.

If you're not familiar with Dundee, played by Robin Williams in 'The Best of Times', then you're probably not as old as I am. But you need to check out the movie. It's an underrated sports movie from 1986, and one of my all-time favorites.

I won't ruin the movie, but Freeze, standing on the sideline, had his big chance in practice today when a Levis pass sailed his way. Freeze attempted to catch it, but the ball bounced off him in front of everyone – media, fans, and the entire team, which booed him. Dr. Death was nowhere in sight.

Freeze, like Dundee, got another chance – he just didn't have to wait as long. And this time, Freeze hauled it in. Everyone cheered. It was a pretty entertaining moment on the final day of this week's minicamp.

-CBS and NFL Network analyst Charles Davis attended today's practice.

-Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk watched today's practice.

-NBC sportscaster Paul Burmeister, who will work preseason games for the team once again alongside Davis, attended today's practice.

-The Titans will wrap up OTAs next week with four dates scheduled, with six already in the books.
