Nissan Stadium will be turned "RED" Friday, Feb. 4 from 4:30 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. in support of Ascension Saint Thomas and the American Heart Association's "National Wear Red Day." National Wear Red Day raises awareness of the threat of heart disease in women as part of the "Go Red for Women" movement.
Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's comprehensive platform designed to increase women's heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. National Wear Red Day is celebrated on the first Friday of every February, which is designated as American Heart Month.
"The female caregivers and clinical leaders of Ascension Saint Thomas and Ascension Saint Thomas Heart understand firsthand how challenging it is for women to prioritize their own heart health amid the demands of busy personal and professional lives," said Michelle Robertson, Chief Operating and Nursing Officer, Ascension Saint Thomas. "National Wear Red Day is a special annual opportunity for us to celebrate the women of Middle Tennessee while encouraging them to pursue heart health in realistic, fun and sustainable ways."
Research has revealed heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women and is often referred to as the "silent killer" because it often has no noticeable symptoms. Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke kill nearly 1 in 3 women in each year. With proper education and action, researchers estimate that 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable. Education means understanding the numbers that affect heart health: total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Action means encouraging women to make simple lifestyle changes like eating better and getting active.
Nissan Stadium joins several other local buildings in lighting up red on Feb. 4, including the Batman Building, Parthenon, Ryman Auditorium, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Metro Nashville Courthouse and many others.
"We're honored to join the Nashville community and our partner, Ascension Saint Thomas, in supporting the Go Red for Women movement on National Wear Red Day," said Titans Vice President of Community Impact, Tina Tuggle. "The lights at Nissan Stadium are hard to miss at night, and we hope women across our community will take notice and pursue information about heart disease prevention and encourage their families and friends to do the same."
