Fisher ready to work on Titans' problem areas

!
The Titans are off to a historic 5-0 start, but understand they haven't played to their full potential just yet.
And yes, coach Jeff Fisher insists his 5-0 Titans are not perfect.

"We have a lot of room for improvement and a lot of things that we have to accomplish. Let me just go into (Sunday's) game, for example. Defensively, we played pretty well. We had two missed tackles for seven yards and didn't have any missed assignments. With the exception of the penalties, we played solid defense," Fisher said Monday.

The Titans gave up 285 yards offense but held an opponent to less than 17 points for a ninth straight game counting the playoffs in Sunday's 13-10 win at Baltimore.

"Now, offensively it was almost as if everybody took turns making a mistake killing the play or killing the drive. With that being said, I mean last week we weren't happy with the defense in some areas. So it's just about improvement, and they understand that. We have to continue to improve. We're not where we need to be and by no means in December yet," Fisher said.

The Titans will study the first five weeks and see what areas they need to fix, change or work on. They will practice for about an hour each day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before Fisher gives them a long weekend off.

But Fisher wouldn't disclose the details on injuries that knocked defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch out of Sunday's game in the first half or defensive tackle Tony Brown's ankle, which had him in a walking boot after the game. Vanden Bosch said after the game he had a groin injury.

"We'll have some players that will practice this week, and we'll have players that will not, either because they're injured and can't or because we're going to rest them. I'll have an injury report ... next week," Fisher said.

The Titans have allowed an NFL-best 56 points through five games. That ties them with the Ravens (2-2).

Fisher isn't worried about losing momentum or the target his Titans now have leading the AFC South. With the win at Baltimore, the Titans have won eight straight regular-season games and tied the franchise's third-longest such winning streak first set during 2000 when they had the NFL's best record at 13-3.

"We're trying to win the next game, period," Fisher said. "In the National Football League, you get everybody at their best. You don't walk on the field and, because you've had success, have an opponent change their approach. Every week's a challenge. You've seen that throughout the league in the first five weeks."

QUARTERBACK MUSICAL CHAIRS: The Titans released Chris Simms on Saturday and signed punter Josh Miller as insurance in case veteran Craig Hentrich continued having problems with his back. But Hentrich played, so the Titans have released Miller and signed Simms back to the roster Monday.

"We had an issue in Miami years ago where Craig couldn't go, and we had to go with Aaron Elling," coach Jeff Fisher said.

"We anticipated this being a field position-type game where you're going to need to get the ball off so it worked out good. Chris totally understood the move and we assured him that we'd get him back under contract, and we did that today and we released Josh."

Fisher said Miller, who filled in for Hentrich at New Orleans last season, had a great deal with five free meals.

"And he got an autographed cap and T-shirt and went home back to the golf course," the coach said.

The Titans had Miller on the roster during the offseason and for most of the preseason.

As for Simms, Fisher said they're keeping the quarterback around. He had been Kerry Collins' backup while Vince Young's sprained left knee healed and now will be the No. 3 quarterback on a team that went with only two quarterbacks the past two seasons.

"He's important to us not only for the immediate future but for the future," Fisher said.

PENALTIES:Jeff Fisher, as co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee, was asked to discuss how officials can dismiss a five-yard penalty and go with a 15-yard penalty. Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was flagged for unnecessary roughness when his arm hit Kerry Collins' helmet on third-and-10 even though left tackle Michael Roos had false started on the play.

The penalty gave the Titans a key first down on their game-winning, 80-yard touchdown drive.

Fisher said the 15-yard penalty trumps a five-yard penalty in such situations. Asked about the penalty, Fisher had a quick answer.

"We've been penalized numerous times on plays exactly like that," he said.
