NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The charitable auction of the shoes Chris Johnson wore in tribute to victims of a Connecticut elementary school shooting ended Monday night with a final bid of more than $9,000.
Johnson wrote the names of the 26 victims who died in the tragic shooting on Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn., on the cleats he wore in Tennessee's Dec. 17 Monday Night Football game.
Johnson and everyone in attendance at LP Field that night participated in a somber moment of silence before the game, and the Titans running back delivered a franchise-record 94-yard touchdown run against the New York Jets, helping Tennessee win 14-10.
After the game Johnson said he would auction the shoes for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
Johnson also spoke with the family of Grace McConnell after learning that they would like to talk to him. Johnson put the shoes up for auction through NFL Auction, with 100 percent of the money raised going to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund that was established by United Way of Western Connecticut.
Multiple bids came in as the auction came to its close, but the shoes were awarded with a bid of $9,098.88.
