Weekend Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans

Mailbag---Ask-Jim-(2)

NASHVILLE – It's time.

Almost.

The Titans kick off training camp on Wednesday with their first practice.

A lot of questions are going to be answered soon.

For now, let's knock out a few questions in this weekend's mailbag.

Yes, it's back…

Marvin Lewis from Port Gibson, Mississippi
Question: Hello Jim. My question is concerning 6ft 2in 220 Michigan standout RB Hassan Haskins , I hadn't heard anything about him. How has he looked in camp. I've seen in where UFA has a better chance of making the cut than Haskins. What are your thoughts of Haskins? I just believe Hassan Haskins is going to leave his footprint on this season.

Jim: Hey Marvin. I think Hassan is a contender, probably the favorite for the No.3 spot ahead of Julius Chestnut, Dillon Johnson and Jabari Small, behind Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. He's going to have to show up on special teams, which I expect him to do. But this is what training camp is all about, all these guys competing for spots.

Jace Anthony from Knoxville, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim. Chris Johnson was recently on one of my favorite Titans podcasts and they were talking about the loss in the 09 playoffs (08 season) to the Ravens. This is still the hardest loss I've ever experienced, because that team was so good (they started 10-0) and the Ravens purposely injured CJ and he was unable to return to the game.
Do you have any insight into how severe that injury was? Have you talked to Chris about it? I've always wondered if he could have played the next week in the AFC Championship Game, had the Titans won. Or, if he would have been out the rest of the season, even if they had made the Superbowl.

Jim: Hey Jace. I remember that game, and incident, well. I talked to Chris about it at one point. It seems like some of his teammates were more upset about it than he was. C.J. has always been a pretty laid-back guy. Think it was just a bad sprain. Here's what he said about it in 2011, a few years later: "They were trying to hurt me a little bit. The play I actually got hurt on, it was a fair play, somebody landed on my ankle the wrong way and I fell back the wrong way. It was a fair play when I got hurt." It's a big weekend for C.J., and I just talked to him on Thursday. Tonight, he's being inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

Donley Canary from Raymore, Missouri
Question: Hi Jim. Looking forward to the 2024 Titans upcoming football season. I am excited about the changes that have occurred with the Titan's offense. It should be a good show for the fans. However, I believe the defense still needs to be improved dramatically. We need a safety, edge rusher and a defensive lineman to compete. Don't get me wrong, improvement has been made to the defense on the back end, but why hold onto 24 million in cap space money when holes need to be filled? Maybe they will but training camp is almost here and the team should be finalized, for the most part, and it is not completed on the defensive side. What is your take on any additions that the Titans may make during the preseason? Shortfalls? Appreciate your take.

Jim: Hey Donley. Some things need to be sorted out in training camp for sure. Jamal Adams was a nice piece to add at safety, but is the team done there? We'll see. As for other positions, I suspect the front office will let guys compete, and then decide where more help is needed. More options will become available as we get closer to the season. My eyes are on the same spots as you.

Jack Walker from Calabasas, California
Question: Hey Jim, hope you're having a great summer! I'm excited for camp to start... Because it's the signal that football season isn't far off. Just a specific question today. I read a story about Taysom Hill being prepped by Klint Kubiak for an expanded role in the Saints offense. Gets me thinking about Malik Willis. IMHO, Willis has a very similar skill-set and physical characteristics. Couldn't he be effective like Hill taking direct snaps on run plays, lining up as a tight end, blocking on run plays and even lining up at WR? Tell me Jim... You ever seen Malik drilling with the WR's?? How are his hands?

Jim: Hey Jack. It's been a great summer, but it's over now. Camp starts in a few days, so it's back to work. As for Malik, if he makes this team, it's going to be as a quarterback. Sure, he's been used on gimmick plays in the past, and that could happen again. But he's not moving to WR.

Mitch Wilson from Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Question: Jim, I love what the Titans are doing. If our o-line and linebackers play to their capability, I think the only thing that will hamstring us is QB play. Levis was impressive as a rookie considering the o-line he was playing behind. If his play improves to the same level as the o-line, I think we're looking at one heck of a season. What do you think?

Jim: Time will tell, Mitch. The Titans have had a lot more issues than QB play in recent years. This is a new team now, and Levis will get a chance to prove himself surrounded by better players.

Ben Mead from Cherry Valley, New York
Question: Hey Jim! Finally got some big news that I and I'm sure a lot of Titans fans were waiting for, a safety! So why do I feel like it's Christmas morning and instead of the gift I wanted my parents got me the cheap knock off?! I mean yeah Jamal Adams is a big name safety but is he going to last more than 2 months before he breaks and is sitting on the shelf? I'm just confused about the fit as well. Wilson has been saying all off-season he wants to be aggressive and press at the line. Wouldn't that mean that you'd like a guy with speed and range to help over the top? Or is this more of a situation where he is a situational player who is here to coach Wilson's system to some of the guys, while adding a DB who can come in on nickel and dime packages as more of a hybrid LB? And if so are the Titans done or could they possibly add another safety? I'd love to hear your thoughts and maybe shed some light on a perspective that I'm just not seeing! Thank Jim and as always TITAIN UP!!

Jim: Dennard knows exactly what he's getting in Jamal Adams, Ben, after coaching him in New York. I think he's a nice piece to add to the defense, a guy who brings something different. His health, and performance, will determine just how much he plays, how the team uses him, whether another safety is brought on board, etc. I didn't hate the move like it sounds like you did. I'm all about adding good players, and I think Jamal Adams can still be a good, productive player, if he can stay healthy.

Michael Zeigler from Tullahoma, Tennessee
Question: Panthers fan here. Should I switch to Titians fan base after moving to TN. Maybe.

Jim: Sure, hop on board! But there's only one i on this team. 😊

Have a great weekend everyone!
