NASHVILLE – The Titans selected Ole Miss receiver A.J. Brown in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night.
Now, he hopes to make an impact in the team's offense as soon as possible.
"I am really excited, man," Brown, who has an older sister that lives in Nashville, said of the Titans. "I went on a visit (to Tennessee) and they told me they liked my game a lot, so I was waiting on a call.
"I think (Marcus) Mariota is a real tough quarterback. … Me, as a rookie, I have to come in and build that trust with him. That's going to be big. He's going to get a complete receiver – anything he needs, I'm going to be there."
Brown, selected 51st overall, is the school's all-time leading receiver with 2,984 yards. He tallied the most 100-yard receiving games in Ole Miss history and is third on the school's leaderboard in receptions with 189.
Brown is the only receiver in program history to tally 60 or more receptions in back-to-back seasons.
Brown, who is from Starksville, Miss., set Ole Miss' single-season receiving record in both yards (1,320) and catches (85) in 2018 as a junior. He was an all-SEC first team performer.
Titans General Manager Jon Robinson said Brown has big hands, and is a great route runner.
"He can catch the ball, and he can break tackles," Robinson said. "He has a good athletic skill-set, and has versatility to play a couple of spots. He's a good athlete. We are excited to have him on the team."
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said Brown is a mature young man.
"He really came across, after our visit here, as a serious, professional football player," Vrabel said of Brown. "It wasn't about the glitz and the glamour. He just kind of sat down, and it felt like we were having a conversation with a guy that was already a pro football player, just his maturity level and how he approached his daily routine, the game, how he practiced, how he prepared. We're just excited to add him to the mix."
Brown, who made a pre-draft visit to the Titans, considers his route-running ability and his ability to run after making a catch his biggest strengths. He said he's capable of playing a number of spots in an offense.
"I am really special when I get the ball in my hands," Brown said. "I thrive on that, not letting one guy tackle me. … My versatility to do a little bit of everything – I am not just going to blow the roof off, but I can run by some guys with technique. … I do a little bit of everything."
Brown said Titans first-round pick Jeffery Simmons, who played at Mississippi State, lives roughly 30 minutes down the street. He said he trained this offseason with Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice.
Brown said he's ready to get to work.
"If my family wasn't right here," he said, "I would be out the door right now."
