Titanic Voices: Frank Wycheck on Importance of Home Stretch

The Titans return home on Sunday for a three-game stretch at LP Field. This is where they need to earn their money and establish themselves as a legitimate playoff contender early in the season.

One of the goals Coach Munchak and his players have talked about is the importance of winning at home. They want to get back to where LP Field is a place they don't lose. When I played we took pride in protecting our home field. A win on Sunday would show a lot about the character of this team, bouncing back from a tough loss at Houston to defeat a good San Diego team.

The Chargers are no pushover. They battled Houston to the wire in Week 1 and then traveled across the country to pull out an unlikely victory at Philadelphia. When you look at their last few meetings, Philip Rivers has always presented a tough challenge for the Titans. But at least this time the Titans get him at LP Field with the big crowd behind them.

The loss at Houston was disappointing. At the same time, I think most people on the outside thought this team would be 0-2 until they got back for the home stretch at LP Field. The Titans had a great opening-day victory at Pittsburgh and showed up against one of the NFL's top teams at Houston. I think they proved not only to Titans fans, but to others around the league that they are for real.

You have to give GM Ruston Webster and his staff an A-plus for all the moves they made during the offseason. They did their due diligence by targeting certain players, then signing the guys they needed to fit their system. They also had a solid draft that produced starting players and added quality depth.

While 2-0 would have been great, fans that have watched the Titans play their first two games should know what they're getting when they come back home on Sunday.

They're getting a team that can compete with the big boys.

An experienced color analyst on Titans Radio, three-time Pro Bowler Frank Wycheck finished his 11-year NFL career with 505 receptions, fourth most in NFL history by a tight end, and one of only five tight ends to surpass 500 career receptions (Shannon Sharpe, Ozzie Newsome, Kellen Winslow and Tony Gonzalez). A member of the team's Ring of Honor and inductee into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Wycheck co-hosts a daily morning show on Nashville's 104.5 The Zone, the flagship station of Titans Radio.
