As for the bye, many guys went out of town. It is usually a time when players will go back to their college campuses, catch up with former teammates and watch their alma mater do battle with a conference foe. For the Mawae family, it was spent doing much of nothing in our new home in Franklin, Tennessee. Actually my wife spent a few days in New York getting our home packed up and shipped down south. Finally, after four months of camping in our own home, we will have all our furniture and clothing, no more fumbling through clothes piles to find something to wear!
Finally to answer the question as to where this team is mentally, there are many opinions on what the bye week can do to a team. Some feel that the last thing you want is time off once you've found your groove, believing you can lose the momentum. Others feel like the time off will give players a chance to reflect on what it feels like to win and be eager to get back at it. I am of the second opinion. With so much that went wrong in the first four or five games, the bye gave players a chance to enjoy the win, let it soak in, but then come down to earth to realize that we have only taken one step in a long journey. With the team back and working hard, the win and bye can serve as a catalyst to propel us into a winning streak turning this program around.
