BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Titans mascot T-Rac and the Tennessee State Parks recently visited Kenrose Elementary School in Williamson County to encourage nearly 800 students to stay active and make healthy choices.
The visit was a continuation of the school visit program that includes Tennessee State Parks rangers and mascot Ramble the Raccoon, video messages from Titans players and coach Mike Munchak and other surprises. Sunny, a bald eagle who was rescued after hitting a powerline near Reelfoot Lake, also visited the school.
The students gave their guests a rousing welcome and listened attentively to the program's message of eating healthy and setting a goal of playing at least 60 minutes a day in the NFL PLAY 60 initiative. They also learned about opportunities at the state's 54 award-winning parks.
Kenrose Elementary School Principal Dr. Marilyn Webb said the program was great for the students and the timing was even better because it coincided with the school's observance or Red Ribbon Week. The theme of the week was "one school, one goal: bully and drug free."
"During this week we highlight our efforts to help our children stay healthy, to stay away from drugs and to treat each other the way we want them to treat each other and the way that want to treat each other here at Kenrose," Webb said. "The PLAY 60 fit right in because it's all about believing in a healthy lifestyle and staying active, which is also part of what we're teaching our children and highlighting and emphasizing, so it was perfect."
Titans cornerback Jason McCourty and quarterback Jake Locker talked to the students through videos about the important of exercise and nutrition, and Munchak told the students about how the players study in addition to staying fit.
Webb said she was impressed with the content of the program and how the students received and reacted to the information.
"I think that having T-Rac and the players and coach was really effective," Munchak said. "All of our students watch the Titans, many of them go to the games, and so they really identify with the Tennessee Titans. It was also great that the show brought in the emphasis on studying, that football players have to study."
