Six Things That Stood Out for the Titans in Sunday's Loss to the Jets

NASHVILLE – The Titans lost 24-17 to the New York Jets on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

Here's a look at six things that stood out from the contest.

Will Levis Blunder

One week after his three-turnover game in Chicago, which included a bad interception late, quarterback Will Levis made another costly blunder in this one. It unfortunately wiped away some of the good things Levis did in the contest. Television cameras showed Coach Brian Callahan ripping Levis after a costly fumble in the first half, when he carelessly pitched the ball back inside the Jets 10 and it was recovered for a fumble. "I think the camera caught it pretty clear, if I had to guess," Callahan responded when asked what he said to Levis. "Yeah, I was upset. It was dumb. It was the same exact thing he did last week, and he cost us points in the red zone. He's a grown up, and he knows better. I was really irritated that he cost us three points in a game when we needed it." Levis left the stadium dejected, and he kicked himself for his mistake near the goal line. "I am not going to point to one play as to why we lost the game," Levis said. "But obviously I can look internally as to what I can do better. It's something I wanted to clean up that didn't get done this week. Disappointing for sure, and I'll work my tail off to be better for my team this week."

Calvin Ridley Impact

Titans receiver Calvin Ridley made a big impact from the get-go. Ridley scored on a 10-yard run early after taking a handoff from Levis and racing to the corner of the end zone. It came just a few plays after Ridley turned on the jets vs the Jets, and got a first down on a 15-yard gainer on third down. Later in the contest, Ridley made a spectacular catch on a deep ball from Levis, as he caught the ball in between two defenders for a 40-yard touchdown catch. It was all part of a four-catch, 77-yard, two-touchdown day for Ridley, although he was hardly in the mood to celebrate. "We lost, man," Ridley said after the game. "I don't want to lose, I want to win the game and go home and chill, and be happy. But we have to go back to work and figure it out. I think we're getting close, though. I'm upset, but I think we're getting close."

Another Blocked Punt

Not again. Yes, again. The Titans allowed another blocked punt in the game, as punter Ryan Stonehouse had a third-quarter punt blocked by Jets receiver Irvin Charles. It led to three points from the Jets, a week after the Titans allowed the Bears to block a punt and return it for a touchdown. Running back Julius Chesnut took the blame for allowing Charles to get by him. "It's on me," Chestnut said. "It's a mistake that shouldn't have been made." Callahan said it was on everyone, and he vowed to get it fixed. "Look, it's inexcusable for us," Callahan said. "That's two games in a row to have a punt blocked. I don't know if I've been around a blocked punt in six years. So, to have it happen back-to-back (games) is really frustrating. But that's on me to fix that, that's on (special teams coordinator) Colt (Anderson) and that's on everybody else to make sure we are doing our jobs on special teams, because as of now it hasn't been good enough all he way around."

Costly Penalty

Defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons plays with relentless effort play in and play out, and I'm not faulting him for his late hit on Rodgers early in the third quarter. But I felt like it was one of the biggest turning points in the game. The Titans were about to get off the field after stopping the Jets on third down, but Simmons was flagged for making contact with the facemask of Rodgers. The Jets were awarded a first down, and they finished the drive off with a touchdown to take a 14-10 lead. It was a big momentum changer. "I understand why he called it," Simmons said of the penalty. "Plays like that hurt the defense, because they ended up scoring. I just have to look at it and see what I could have done better."

Landry's Fast Start

Titans edge rusher Harold Landry is off to a heck of a start. Landry sacked Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice on Sunday, and he now has three sacks in two games. Landry was credited for two passes defensed because he batted balls down, and he was impactful in the run game as well. The Titans did a decent job of disrupting Rodgers during the contest, especially early. But the veteran QB stepped up and made plays when the Jets needed it, much to the dismay of the Titans. Rodgers ended up throwing for 176 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

Long Ball to Burks

I'm not dropping this in here to put blame on anyone. I do a Six Things That Stood Out from the contest each game, and the Levis long pass to Burks – that was intercepted – was one of the plays that stood out. I posted on social media I didn't think the interception was all on Levis, because Burks got both hands on the football and a Jets player – Brandin Echols – ended up with it. Fans can debate who that INT was on, and maybe it's on both? Give Echols credit for making a play. One thing's for sure: The inability to make that play hurt the Titans in the game, and the Jets ended up turning the turnover into points. "I still got faith in Treylon to be able to go up and make that play, the cornerback made a great play on the pick," Levis said. "But gotta keep working on them, keep testing those deep balls." Said Callahan: "I didn't mind the aggressiveness of the throw. It hit him right where you wanted it to hit him. As they were coming to the ground, the DB kind of got lucky as he rolled over the top of him and the ball was sort of sitting right there. I'd like to see us come down with that play."
