Jacksonville center Brad Meester announced that he plans to retire at the end of this season, his 14th in the NFL (the most any player has played for the Jaguars). Since being selected in the second round of the 2000 NFL Draft, Meester has played in a franchise-record 207 games (all starts). He's also had consecutive starts streaks of 92 (Sept. 3, 2000 through Dec. 4, 2005) and 88 (Oct. 26, 2008 through present).
"Fourteen years in the league, I think he has played 200 games. That's a great accomplishment for him." Titans coach Mike Munchak said. "That's not easy to do staying healthy year after year playing offensive line. I always thought he was a good football player. He plays hard, he's a guy that's always down by the pile."
Munchak said he's enjoyed watching Meester play on film while preparing for games and during them.
"He's a real smart player, has that edge to him, knows how to play all the little tricks of the game, so I know they're going to miss him," Munchak said. "It's great that he's going to walk out healthy for the most part, which is a good thing."
Jurrell Casey, whose 10.5 sacks are the most by a defensive tackle and 10th in the NFL this season, said he expects a challenge. Casey said Meester does a good job of using all the info he's learned over the years.
"He's going to battle you and push you to the limit, so who wants it more is what it's going to come down to," Casey said. "He's a great center, great at playing the position," Casey said. "He knows where certain things are coming from, he knows where he needs to go power block and things like that. He's been doing a great job at that."
